Words and Music, Directed by Diane Moser | Fall '17 Ensemble & Recital Series | School of Jazz

Friday, December 8, 2017 at 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

School of Jazz Performance Space, Room I531, Arnhold Hall 55 West 13th Street, New York, NY 10011

Performance is a central component of every student's education at The New School's School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the Ensemble Showcases are where faculty-led student groups showcase their talent and creativity

Breaking it down letter by letter-telling a story-rhythmic codes-poetic ebb and flow- exploring the use of "words" as a compositional/improvisational tool is the theme of this compositional performance ensemble. Some of the "tools" that we will use are: musical cryptograms, rhythms of speech, elements of program music, poetry, sonic devices, graphic scores and Soundpainting. We'll examine the music of Pauline Oliveros, Stockhausen, Messiaen, John Coltrane, Alvin Lucier, Paul Lansky, the historic collaborations of Jane Cortez/Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus/Langston Hughes, David Amram/Jack Kerouac, and the pioneering work of the vocal group Roomful of Teeth and others. Students will create weekly compositional sketches for the ensemble, culminating in a final composition to be performed at the end of the semester recital.

Presented by The New School's School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
