The Marquis: Lafayette Reconsidered

The Marquis: Lafayette Reconsidered

Theresa Lang Community and Student Center, Arnhold Hall

Laura Auricchio, dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies at The New School, discusses her new publication The Marquis: Lafayette Reconsidered (Alfred A. Knopf, 2014) with Luis Jaramillo, Director of the School of Writing.

This "sharp and moving biography" (Kirkus, starred review) of the Marquis de Lafayette, French hero of the American Revolution, looks past the storybook tale of Lafayette and explores how his reputation rose to great heights during the American Revolution only to collapse more than a decade later during the French Revolution. As Auricchio illustrates, even today he remains a murky figure in French memory.

A reception and book signing will follow the talk.
