Tackling Disaster Issues Creatively: Cases in Indonesia and Thailand

Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Glass Corner, 25 East 13th Street, E 206

The Japan Foundation Asia Center and The Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility at The New School announce the lecture event “Tackling Disaster Issues Creatively: Cases in Indonesia and Thailand”.

The evening will feature two prominent experts from Indonesia and Thailand who will introduce the unique approaches they have used to tackle disaster issues in their respective fields of architecture and game design. Their work has included educating the public, particularly children, on disaster preparedness through engaging games and designing effective shelters that can transition into permanent housing units for disaster survivors to recover and rebuild. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session and a reception.

Speakers include:

Prof. Ikaputra, Department of Architecture and Planning Engineering, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Prof. Ikaputra has worked with communities hit by disasters to rebuild their life. He has come up with the concept of Core House, a structure unit that can be added according to the needs to the residents. This enabled survivors to purchase units as funds become available. He also observed that preservation of community is important especially to those that are more vulnerable, and re-locating to distant shelters and losing community network can sometimes be detrimental to senior population.

Ms. Ruttikorn Vuttikorn, Industrial Designer, Play Activist

Ms. Vuttikorn has designed educational games for children and to empower disaster survivors. She has worked on the HANDs! Project along with Prof. Ikaputra and Mr. Nagata. HANDs is an educational program in which aspired youth in Southeast Asia gather together to site visit disaster stricken area, and conduct workshop to create on disaster preparedness program.
