Graduation Recital at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Studies - Antonin Berger, guitar

School of Jazz Performance Space, Room I531, Arnhold Hall
General Public

After four fruitful years at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Anto Berger will be performing his Senior Recital, at The New School’s Performance Space (Arnhold Hall).

For this concert, Berger will be playing a healthy mix of compositions and standards from the Great American Songbook, in a quintet format. The concept at the core of this event is to reconcile his dedication to the great repertoire of traditional jazz standards and his modern-sounding style of composing and arranging. To that effect, Berger will begin the performance by establishing a clear stylistic difference between his own works and the standards on the set list, to then gradually blur the line between those two types of songs, reflecting his rewarding journey on the New York City jazz scene. This recital will mark the end of a chapter during which Anto Berger has evolved and transformed into a musician with a strong sense of tradition while keeping an energized eye on the future of this music.

Anto Berger is an up-and-coming jazz guitarist, composer and arranger. In 2015, he moved from his hometown of Paris, France, to New York City in order to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Since then, he has gradually been making a name for himself by performing at numerous venues, bars and restaurants all over town, including jam sessions at world-famous clubs such as Mezzrow, Smalls and Fat Cat. Under the close tutelage of renowned pianist Michael Kanan, he has developed a personal sound and musical identity through the dedicated study of jazz history and its pillar figures. He continuously strives to combine elegance, simplicity and soulfulness in his music. Anto Berger is set to record his debut album in the Summer of 2019, which will feature his compositions and arrangements, as well as some of his favorite standards.
