Content is King; Context is King Kong: New Technologies for Integrating Contextual Content into Digital Media

The phrase “Content is King; Context is King Kong” refers to the greater value of delivering the right content to the right people at the right time. More than merely identifying web and mobile users and serving appropriate content in the right locations, contextual content now embraces new technologies that can identify sentiment or express moods, as well as associate content with appropriate design or look and feel, to enhance text, images, or sounds.

In this session, some of the leading developers of contextual content experiences discuss how to make digital content more exciting and relevant for those who interact with it.

Speakers include:

Sami Paihonen is the senior vice president of design for Ixonos, a mobile creative firm that develops key experiences and technologies for multi-screen engagement. Sami was previously with Samsung, where he developed TouchWiz, the first user experience platform for the Samsung Galaxy tablets and smartphones. He held numerous positions at Nokia over a decade-long period, including head of user interface design.

Bob Coyne is the chief technology officer of WordsEye, a Columbia University venture that has developed text-to-scene software that enables descriptive text to be depicted automatically as 3D scenes. Bob was previously with Semantic Light and AT&T Labs, where he worked on real-time performance animation software. At Nichimen Graphics, he helped create the Mirai 3D animation system and the Nendo 3D modeler.

Craig Singer is the CEO of Hopskoch, a New York City-based venture that has developed the first transmedia storytelling platform for social conversations. The company enables real-time interaction with content across multiple networks. Craig was previously with Walt Disney Studios, to which he had sold his companies fanlib and My2Centences. Craig is a producer/director whose work has appeared at Cannes Film Festival; TriBeCa Film Festival, and the Hollywood Film Festival He was awarded a Primetime EMMY for the ‘L Word’ interactive. Craig is a member of the PGA New Media Council East executive committee.

Valerie De La Rosa leads social strategy for StumbleUpon, a context-driven web recommendation engine. She has previously provided digital brand strategy for companies including Conde Nast, Virgin Mobile USA, Buzzfeed, and Momentum Worldwide. She has spoken at such forums as the Brandhackers Digital Insights Speaker Series and the HuffPostLive Tech Gamechangers.

Moderator Chris Pfaff is a board delegate of the PGA New Media Council from 2006-2013; former PGA New Media Council vice chairman, and former PGA Board of Directors delegate, Chris has been a PGA New Media Council member since 2004. He leads a consultancy – Chris Pfaff Tech/Media LLC – that represents some of the leading service providers, audio/video technology firms, networking vendors, and media companies in the world, from PRIMEDIA and Eastman Kodak to Cantor Telecom. A veteran of the venture world, Chris helped launch more than 20 ventures from the Lucent New Ventures Group, including iBiquity Digital; Flarion; Lucent Digital Video, and GeoVideo Networks, among others.  In addition, he has helped launch AT&T’s Internet strategy; the Viacom New Media division of Viacom, Inc.; Sony Electronics’ Digital Betacam format, and Sharp Electronics’ LCD product division.
