Preparing for Natural Disasters from the Ground Up: Community-based Resiliency and Superstorm Sandy

Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at 8:30 am to 10:00 am

Theresa Lang Community and Student Center, Arnhold Hall 55 West 13th Street, Room I-202, New York, NY 10011

Cities across the globe are facing more frequent and more punitive natural disasters.  At the same time, the U.S. federal government is showing reduced interest in and support for resiliency planning and recovery, making the efforts and leverage of local communities all the more critical.  This panel will convene representatives from academia and government and practitioners in the field of disaster recovery and resiliency to address the strategies behind and implications of community-based resiliency (broadly considered).  Using Superstorm Sandy as the context, panelists will reflect on the successes and challenges of past efforts and discuss strategies for moving forward.

The panelists include: Drew Curtis from Ironbound Community Corporation (Newark, NJ); Michelle de la Uz from Fifth Avenue Committee (Brooklyn); Erika Lindsey from the NYC Mayor's Office of Recovery and Resiliency; and Leigh Graham from CUNY; moderator: Rachel Meltzer, Assistant Professor of Urban Policy Analysis and Management, The New School.

This event is sponsored by: Tishman Environment and Design Center, Center for New York City Affairs, and the Urban Policy Program at Milano School for International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy.
