A powerful and diverse lineup of mediamakers, designers, and communications strategists is scheduled. See below for a sampling of featured projects.
#Dysturb is a community endeavoring to break beyond traditional publishing outlets to make photojournalism accessible to a wider audience and reliably relay the testimonies of the people on the ground. Taking it to the streets, #Dysturb sticks human-scale news pictures in public venues.
The Syria Campaign is a growing movement demanding more from global leaders in government, institutions, and the media. Attention-grabbing and headline-driving stunts push for safety, fair resource allocation, cultural preservation and peace for Syrians, while holding decision makers accountable for the impact their actions have on the ground
Emerging from filmmaker Thenmozhi Soundararajan's "Touchable: The Journey from Untouchable to Dalit," Dalit Nation is a transmedia campaign bringing together scholars, artists, and activists under one shared goal: to eradicate caste. It takes its name from the self-determined name that Dalits use, instead of the term “untouchable.”
Hollow is an interactive documentary and participatory project examining the future of rural America through the eyes and voices of McDowell County, W. Va. Video portraits, data visualizations, photography, soundscapes and community-generated content bring otherwise untold stories to life online.
Points of View is an ongoing interactive web documentary comprised of auto-ethnographic video footage shot by Palestinians working with B'Tselem's Camera Distribution Project. The video trails offer intimate and site-situated glimpses at life under the Israeli occupation.
Photography, Expanded is produced by Magnum Foundation, Open Society Foundations Documentary Photography Project, New Arts Axis, Aperture Foundation, and Parsons The New School for Design with generous support from Open Society Foundations Documentary Photography Project, the Ford Foundation JustFilms, and the Compton Foundation. The symposium is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
Magnum Foundation champions in-depth, independent documentary photography that fosters empathy and social engagement. We support, train, and mentor the next generation of photographers and seek to increase the impact of historical and contemporary photography.
