The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music presents student Or Bareket (Bass), who will be performing his senior recital.

Born in Jerusalm and raised in Buenos-Aires and Tel-Aviv, Or Bareket is quickly establishing himself as one of the most versatile bassists on the NYC jazz scene. He was awarded the 1st prize at the 2011 international society of bassists jazz competition. Or’s diverse heritage informs his distinct style. His approach to improvisation is informed by Mediterranean, South American, and north African folklores, all interpreted through his deep knowledge and appreciation of the American Jazz tradition. Or started playing the electric bass at age 16 after hearing Jaco Pastorius for the first time. At 18 he took up the upright bass and started his classical training with Teddy Kling (principal bass at the Israeli philharmonic) and later with Prof. Michael Klinghoffer (former assistant to maestro Gary Karr), all the while working extensively in the Israel jazz scene and studying jazz with bassist Avishai Cohen, among others. Since moving to New York Or has performed, recorded and toured with a wide array of artists all over Europe and the Americas as well as locally. Notable names include Ari Hoenig, Jean-Michel Pilc, The 3 Cohens, Don Friedman,Eliot Zigmund,Billy Hart, Victor Lewis, Gilad Hekselman, Cyrille Aimee and Yotam Silberstein to name a few. Or is a multiple-time recipient of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship for outstanding performers and the Eubie Blake Fellowship. He has participated in Betty Carter’s “Jazz Ahead” at the Kennedy center, The steans institute Ravinia workshop and the Banff workshop for Jazz and creative music.

This recital will feature Or’s original music and arrangements of Jazz standards and Israeli folk songs, performed by a dynamic trio of world-class musicians.
