“Opening Up About Alzheimer’s,” the story by a Manhattan couple living with the disease, will be presented by The New School’s Institute for Retired Professionals and their Stage of Life Committee.
Speakers will be Geri and James Taylor, nationally noted Alzheimer’s activists since Geri Taylor was diagnosed with the disease five years ago. They have shared their story of living with Alzheimer’s as speakers to over 5,000 people in seven states. The couple, who frankly discuss the disease and its impact on both husband and wife, have spoken at the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Science Conference in London, and have been invited to participate in the International Alzheimer’s Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, in December.
The New York Times featured an in-depth article about Geri and James Taylor just over a year ago, a remarkably honest portrayal where the couple explained their adjustment to the diagnosis, how they faced the associated stigma of the disease, how they told their adult children and family members, and their ongoing efforts to live fully in the special time given to them. They emphasized in the article their intention “not to hide,” but to speak out about their experience.
Geri Taylor, a registered nurse with a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University, had a career as a senior executive in Health Administration where she developed innovative long-term health care programs in New York City. James Taylor, a new member of the IRP, with degrees from DePauw University and the University of Chicago, worked for 30 years in finance and consulting at IBM and is a past president of the White Plains Board of Education.
“The Taylors have become sought after speakers on this topic and we have found their presentation to be groundbreaking,” said Renee Solomon and Nancy Yates, co-chairs of the Stage of Life Committee at the IRP. “I think this story of facing challenges with grace, courage, and humor is informative and inspiring and I hope that many members of the The New School community and of the New York City metropolitan area will attend,” said Elizabeth Weinmann, Director of The New School’s Institute for Retired Professionals.”
