White student activists from Parkland, Florida and Black student activists from Chicago and New York come to The New School to share their experiences with gun violence, activism and organizing for gun reform laws and safe communities.
“People are listening and people care. They’re reporting the right things.” - Cameron Kasky, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland, FL, one day after the mass shooting that took the lives of 14 students and three staff members. On April 16th, after four Black teens were shot and killed in Miami, hundreds of Black students marched against gun violence. They received little news coverage. 16-year-old student Mi-Olda Faustin said, “It’s a race thing. If you’re white, you get more publicity about these things.” The US has the highest rate of mass shootings in the world, the highest rates of gun ownership and a gaping racial divide when it comes to gun deaths. Black children are ten times more likely to die from guns than white children. Please join these student activists as they engage and challenge all of us to reimagine what we know about gun violence and how to stop it.
Presented by Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy.
