Since 1999, Mannes School of Music has presented a yearlong music festival every year. Each festival includes more than 20 events performed by the school's gifted young student artists, distinguished faculty members, and renowned guests, at prestigious New York City concert venues and cultural institutions. The festivals are an outstanding component of the total Mannes program.

"The Polish Connection"

Curated by Donald Wagner, a member of the Mannes Board of Governors, this concert will mark Poland's 101st National Independence Day and feature the original compositions and transcriptions of 4 outstanding Polish composers: Xaver Scharwenka, Moritz Moszkowski, Ignacy Paderewski and Ignaz Friedman.  The music of these legendary virtuoso composer/pianists was featured prominently on concert programs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries but has largely vanished in recent years.  They wrote music in all genres, including operas and symphonies, but it was their brilliant and lyrical solo piano works and concertos that were most celebrated by audiences of their day.

The music will be performed by the extraordinary students of Mannes Conservatory. Mr. Wagner will also offer commentary in between the pieces, providing color and context on the composers and their music.
