INSIDE (hi) STORIES is a Histories & Theories series, curated by design historian Sarah Lichtman (ADHT), and architectural historian Ioanna Theocharopoulou (SCE) at Parsons School fo Design.

This lecture on 'Design by IKEA. A Cultural History' will be delivered by Sara SalomonKristofferson.

In this lecture, cultural and design historian Sara Salomon Kristofferson will present a cultural history of the Swedish home furnishings company, IKEA and how the corporation has controversially come to define a nation. Kristofferson argues that the company's commercial success has been founded on a neat alignment of the brand with a particular image of Swedish national identity – one that is bound up with ideas of social democracy and egalitarianism - and its material expression in a pared-down, functional design aesthetic. Her lecture, which draws from her new book, Design by IKEA, traces IKEA's symbolic connection to Sweden and discuss how the company both promoted and profited from the concept of Scandinavian Design. It's a study of how design is fundamentally entangled with marketing, storytelling, consumerism, politics and globalization.

Sara Salomon Kristofferson is a professor of design history and theory at Konstfack in Stockholm and holds a PhD in Art History and Visual Studies from the University of Gothenburg. She has published a number of articles and essays on various aspects of design and lectures at museums and universities, including The Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, Stockholm, Sweden; École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, Paris, France; Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen, Denmark, Humboldt-Universität, Berlin, Germany.
