Film Screening: Finding Babel

Monday, December 11, 2017 at 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm

Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Auditorium (Room N101), Sheila C. Johnson Design Center 66 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10003

Join us for a free screening of Finding Babel in celebration of the concurrent release of a new play, translation collection, and documentary about Isaac Babel.

Isaac Babel's subversive work challenged the ideology of the early Soviet Union, ultimately resulting his arrest and execution in 1940. 75 years later, his grandson Andrei Malaev-Babel embarks on a journey to uncover the truth of the Jewish writer's life, literature, and death in the new documentary Finding Babel, featuring Liev Schreiber as the voice of Isaac Babel.

Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring the New School's Associate Professor Val Vinokur, whose new Isaac Babel translation, The Essential Fictions, has just been released by Northwestern University Press, and Rajiv Joseph, playwright of the Atlantic Theater Company's latest production, Describe The Night, which features Isaac Babel as a central character, and David Novack, Director of Finding Babel.

Presented in partnership between The New School, the Atlantic Theater Company, and Odessa Films.
