Economics Seminar Series- Teresa Ghilarducci & Darrick Hamilton

Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Room D1009, Albert and Vera List Academic Center 6 East 16th Street, 10th Floor, New York, NY 10011

"The Political Economy of Cradle to Grave Wealth Security: Baby Bonds and Guaranteed Retirement Accounts".

NSSR Economics & Milano School of International Affairs Professors Ghilarducci and Hamilton will discuss two versions of a controversial solution to wealth and risk inequality – assets for the poor, middle class, and the dispossessed. Baby Bonds and Guaranteed Retirement Accounts are superficially financialization of welfare programs. However, they argue that wealth accounts – baby bonds and guaranteed retirement accounts – reduce risks to families of living in capitalism, redistribute risk, and promote productive lives. Ghilarducci recommends that all arguments are best understood in two popular pieces, a short article here, and her new book from Columbia University Press and a new article in the volume called the Contradictions of Pension Fund Capitalism. Hamilton's argument for Baby Bonds can be read here.

Hosted by the NSSR/Economics Department, the seminar series features lectures, paper and book presentations from prominent Economists.
