Climate Action Week: University Center Sustainability Tour

University Center

Tour the University Center with Thomas Whalen, Director of Facilities Management, and Katherine Perkins, Assistant Director for Environmental Health & Safety, to learn about the various sustainable faetures of the new University Center.

The University Center is a 16-story, approximately 375,000-square-foot building located at the intersection of 14th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The building has 230,000 square feet of academic space on the first seven floors and 135,000 square feet for a 600-bed dormitory on the remaining nine floors, providing space for all aspects of campus life. There will be an additional 10,000 gross square feet of retail space on the first floor and below street level along 14th Street.

Sustainability is a core value at The New School and is an essential feature of the new University Center. With a projected U.S. Green Building Council LEED rating of Gold, the University Center will help set the New York City standard for green technology and building practices. The building will serve as a teaching tool for New School academic programs in architecture and design, environmental studies, and sustainability management.

The New School demonstrates our commitment to climate action and our solidarity with people converging on New York City for the historic People’s Climate March on September 21, with a week-long series of events focused on climate change. As a leader and official endorser of the March, The New School’s Climate Action Week includes a diverse set of programming directed towards the university and wider community for enriched learning and engagement opportunities, scholarship, innovation and creativity, solidarity and collective action, and highlighting New School’s values around climate justice and action.

This event is co-sponsored by the New School for Public Engagement, the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban PolicyParsons The New School For Design, the Tishman Environment and Design Center and the Sustainable Cities Club.
