The New School Intercollegiate spELLing Bee Finals

Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

John L. Tishman Auditorium, University Center 63 Fifth Avenue, Room U100, New York, NY 10003

Project-based learning and a great American tradition, the spelling bee, come together this semester as the Intensive English as a Second Language Program in English Language Studies holds its program-wide spELLing bee Finals (the "ELL" stands for "English Language Learners"), sponsored by Pearson.

For the first time this year, the event will be intercollegiate, with ESL students from the New School competing with ESL students from Pace University.

The spELLing bee Finals are the culmination of a semester-long project in the reading classes at both universities.

The project began with reading teachers in both college Intensive English Programs guiding their students to choose useful words from their reading materials, find definitions and write example sentences, and compile this all into master lists. Students then studied the lists and practiced the protocols for spelling bees.  The winners of the in-class competitions will compete in the Finals, open to the public, in the Tishman Auditorium.

Feel the suspense as these brave English language learners show their mastery of the intricacies of English spelling.

Sponsored by the School of Languages and Pearson.
