Jazz Presents | Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite | Directed by Cecil Bridgewater

Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm

New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance Space, Arnhold Hall 55 West 13th Street, New York, NY 10011

In honor of Black History Month, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music presents a very special performance of legendary drummer and composer Max Roach's We Insist! Freedom Now Suite. Co-written by Oscar Brown, Jr., and considered by many to be Max Roach's most important composition, the Suite was a pivotal work in the African-American protest movement during the Civil Rights era.

Since it was first recorded in 1960, the piece has remained relevant and has continued to grow in stature. Critic Michael G. Nastos writes "Every modern man, woman, and child could learn exponentially listening to this recording -- a hallmark for living life".

Led by Roach's longtime trumpeter and New School faculty member Cecil Bridgewater, this concert will feature a stellar group of world-renowned musicians.

 - Billy Harper*, tenor saxophone

 - Andrew Cyrille*, drums
