School of Jazz Performance Space, Arnhold Hall 55 West 13th Street, New York, NY 10011

The Eyes of the Masters series is a special class presented by The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where legendary artists share their experiences, knowledge and insights into the world of music both as an art form and as a career. The classes are free and open to the public.

A superior if sometimes overlooked trumpeter (the Kenny Dorham of the 1990s), Claudio Roditi is a frequently exciting hard bop-oriented player. He came to the U.S. to study at Berklee (1970-1971) and gigged around the Boston area until moving to New York in 1976. Roditi played with Charlie Rouseand Herbie Mann, and most importantly, in the early '80s, he started working regularly with Paquito D'Rivera. The reliable trumpeter has been on many straight-ahead recording sessions, in addition to being a member of Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation OrchestraRoditi recorded as a leader for Green Street (an obscure date in 1984), Uptown, Candid, and Reservoir, among other labels.

This Rio born trumpet and flugelhorn player has been on the US jazz scene since studying at Berklee College of Music in 1970. Often overlooked among the top players, Claudio has lived in New York for 30 years. He is known for his warm, fluid sound combining post bop and Brazilian elements. A Grammy nominee, he has recorded a dozen albums as a leader. With his Resonance / Heirloom debut, he will get the national push which he so richly deserves. He has worked with Herbie Mann, Charlie Rouse, Paquito D'Rivera and Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra. This swinging and sensual date features the legendary drummer Duduka da Fonseca and pianist Helio Alves. On this recording, Claudio performs a number of originals and lesser known gems from the Brazilian repertoire.
