Eyes of the Entrepreneurs | Bill Stafford, Independent Music Publisher

Friday, September 15, 2017 at 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

School of Jazz Performance Space, Room I531, Arnhold Hall, Jazz Performance Space, Arnold Hall 55 West 13th Street, New York, NY 10011

A music publisher (or publishing company) is responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. The copyrights owned and administered by publishing companies are one of the most important forms of intellectual property in the music industry. Publishing companies play a central role in managing this vital asset.

Although publishing is one of the most important financial aspects of a musician's career, it is a complex field and artists often overlook this aspect of their professional life, or find it hard to get straight answers to common publishing issues in the complicated and ever-evolving era of streaming services and digital broadcasting.

Music publisher Bill Stafford, founder of Missing Link Music, will join the School of Jazz this week to discuss the basics of publishing, including how to register your compositions and recordings, understanding what a publisher does, outlining the various types of royalties, and how money is actually made and paid throughout the industry.

Missing Link is one of the leading independent music publishing companies offering fast, efficient and transparent licensing and royalty collection for songwriters and copyright holders.

Please join us for a lively conversation on a topic that affects all musicians. This event is free and open to the public.

The School of Jazz presents the Eyes of the Entrepreneurs series which is dedicated to empowering artists to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset in taking responsibility for their art and their career. More than ever before, musicians are their own businesses. Each week we feature notable guest artists, who will discuss the paths they took in developing their vision and life in music, as well concepts like authenticity and integrity, skill development, community building, networking, and more.
