Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes: Two Lectures

Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm

John L. Tishman Auditorium, University Center 63 Fifth Avenue, Room U100, New York, NY 10003

The Mannes Orchestra welcomes New School scholars Elizabeth Kendall and Rosemary O'Neill to present lectures exploring the cultural context for the Mannes Orchestra’s spring performances of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

“Diaghilev: the Avant-Garde comes out of the past” - a lecture by Elizabeth Kendall of the New School for Social Research. Kendall discusses Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, Russia’s magical silver age and the kind of avant-garde it produced.

“Ambient Milieu: The Parisian Modernism and the Ballets Russes” - a lecture by Rosemary O’Neill of Parsons. O’Neill discusses Diaghilev’s 1906 exhibition of Russian Art, the shift from Gesamtkunstwerk to expressions of primitivism and formal experimentation, concluding with select pots-war collaborations between Parisian modernists and the Ballets Russes.

We hope you'll join us for the Mannes Orchestra's performances of Stravinsky's masterpiece and other works at City Center with Martha Graham Dance Company, and at Alice Tully Hall.

Presented by The Mannes Orchestra.
