A tour of the exhibition with curator Arthur Ou.
Ideas and experiences of “China” live across many borders. The slim strip of the Taiwan Strait connects Mainland China and the island of Taiwan, the 110 miles spanning a complex set of histories through which these places link and diverge. Another 300 miles west is Hong Kong, another island with a shifting set of relationships to the Mainland. These three distinct but intertwined places are considered the main Chinese regions, although the vast Chinese diaspora ranges across most continents.
This exhibition brings together a group of artists who embody a migrant sensibility, crossing the borders from one Chinese region to another and beyond, and whose work, in direct or oblique ways, respond to the locations in which they make their artistic base. As routes of commerce and leisure between these Chinese regions have become more open, these artists have embraced this mobility, traveling (or having multiple artistic bases) from Mainland China to Taiwan, Taiwan to Hong Kong or to Singapore, and other areas with large historical Chinese populations. Through works in video, photography, installation, sound and performance, this exhibition explores the pluralism of this Chinese identity, geographically and culturally, and thereby casts the historical and political vicissitudes embedded in the bilaterally laden phrase “Cross-Strait Relations” in new light.
Artists in the exhibition include Chen Chieh-Jen, Heman Chong, Lee Kit, Michael Lin, Hong-Kai Wang, Ming Wong and Jun Yang. Curated by Arthur Ou.
