"Bird With Strings" Live | Charlie Parker Jazz Festival 25th Anniversary | Presented by The New School College of Performing Arts

Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 7:30 pm

Alvin Johnson/J.M. Kaplan Hall 66 West 12th Street , New York, NY 10011

The New School's College of Performing Arts, in partnership with the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, presents a very special concert of "Bird With Strings", in honor of the Festival's 25th Anniversary.

Under the direction of Keller Coker (Dean, The New School for Jazz), with guest soloist Dave Glasser (alto sax), a chamber orchestra featuring musicians from the Mannes School of Music and the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music will perform Charlie Parker's 1949-50 recordings of these arrangements.

When impresario Norman Granz proposed a recording with strings, Parker, who listened extensively to classical music (and was particularly interested in the innovations of Igor Stravinsky), jumped at the chance. The recording was one of the most successful of his career, and one of Parker's personal favorites.

Dr. Keller Coker is a jazz trombonist, composer, and arranger. During Coker’s esteemed career, he founded the American Metropole Orchestra, served as executive director of the Smith Fine Arts Series, arranged music for Kurt Elling, Cuong Vu, Martha Reeves, Joe Lovano, and Allen Toussaint, produced shows for Aiofe O’Donovan, Dr. Lonnie Smith, the Turtle Island Quartet, and Sean Jones.

Native New Yorker Dave Glasser encompasses a uniquely personal sound rooted in rich tradition. A veteran of the Clark Terry quintet, the Count Basie Orchestra (under the direction of Frank Foster), Illinois Jacquet, Barry Harris, and Dizzy Gillespie, his music covers a wide range of expression. A faculty member at the New School for over 20 years, he is proud to have helped develop many of today’s jazz musicians.
